Histon Manor plein air painting competition 2025

Competing in Histon Manor’s competition was a great experience. Meeting other artists and seeing the range of approaches, gadgets, colours and subjects was so refreshing. I felt so happy when one of the judges said he liked my colour palette. It was also helpful to have a set time to finish within which stopped me tinkering!

I like having layers in my work and this view had several which gave me lots to work with.

Plein air painting

On the run up to the competition in Histon manor I made the most of the good weather and took myself out drawing. I was so inspired to paint outside in the elements.

Firstly I walked to the local duck pond and painted the scene in gouache. For my second plein air practise I went swimming at Peterborough Lido and stayed to paint it.

It felt quite scary to paint in public at first but people were mostly encouraging and curious

Shortlisted entries

When my sister emailed me about this competition it felt right up my street. Combining my creativity and my love for outdoor swimming I created ideas for each event. I was delighted when several of my designs were shortlisted for four out of the five events Level Water will be running in 2025.

Given the designs required a limited palette and would be screen printed if picked I decided this would be a good opportunity to work digitally
